Guangdong Ranks Top Nationwide in Terms of Valid Invention Patents for Six Consecutive Years

On January 15, the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China held press conference in Beijing and released relevant data on the invention patent application and licensing in China in 2015. It was indicated that, by 2015, Guangdong had owned 138,878 valid patents for invention, ranking top nationwide for six consecutive years.
 
As one of the “standard” important indicators, the number of valid patents for invention is also an important indicator for evaluating regional science and technology innovation ability and level. In 2015, China saw 1.102 million accepted applications for patents for invention, with a year-on-year increase of 18.7%, ranking top worldwide for five consecutive years.
 
Other released data showed that, in 2015, a total of 103,941 patents for invention were applied and 33,477 were licensed in Guangdong, respectively ranking second and third nationwide. On the list of Chinese cities in terms of numbers of applications for patents for invention and licensed patents for invention, Shenzhen and Guangzhou ranked among the Top 10. The ranking of enterprises in terms of patents for invention showed that enterprises in Guangdong have great advantages. Five of the Top 10 enterprises in terms of number of licensed patents for invention in 2015 are based in Guangdong. In addition, six of the Top 10 Chinese enterprises in terms of number of accepted PCT applications are based in Guangdong. Of them, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd and ZTE Corporation respectively took the first and second places with 3,538 and 3,150 PCT applications in 2015.
