Guangdong Tops Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong with 47 Enterprises Listed on China’s Top 500

On January 16, the Enterprise Institute of Guangdong Academy of Social Science (GASS) and Guangdong Provincial Situation Investigation and Research Center convened the news conference at GASS and released the Top 50 Most Competitive Large-Scale Enterprises of Guangdong and the assessment results of Competitiveness of Vocational Education Schools of Guangdong Province for the 13th consecutive year. The analysis indicates that the most competitive large-scale enterprises are mostly distributed in Guangzhou and Shenzhen and the electronic information industry has taken an important place in the industrial structure of Guangdong. In 2014, six enterprises of Guangdong were included in Fortune 500 and 47 enterprises in China’s Top 500. It is the first time for Guangdong to exceed Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong in terms of the number of enterprises included in China’s Top 500.
 
According to the assessment results, Huawei ranks the first place of the Top 50 Most Competitive Large-Scale Enterprises of Guangdong, and Guangzhou Baiyun University takes the first place of the most competitive higher education institutes (private) of Guangdong Province; both Huizhou College of Business and Guangdong Light Industry Vocational Technical School rank the first of the most competitive vocational schools while Baiyun Technician College of Business and Technology the first of the technician schools.
 
The competitiveness of large-scale enterprises of Guangdong has been improved to some extent and the electronic information industry has taken an important position in the industrial structure of Guangdong Province. Large-scale enterprises further amassed in the Pearl River Delta. 49 of the Top 50 most competitive enterprises are located in the Pearl River Delta, among which 23 are in Guangzhou and 19 in Shenzhen.
 
The report also compares Guangdong Province with the other coastal provinces and municipalities from the number, operating incomes and profits of enterprises of Guangdong included in Fortune 500 and China’s Top 500 in the past three years.
 
From the aspect of enterprises included in Fortune 500, the Chinese mainland (including Hong Kong) has 96 enterprises listed on Fortune 500 in 2014, an increase of seven enterprises against the previous year. Six enterprises of Guangdong Province were on the list of Fortune 500: China Southern Power Grid (115th), Ping An Insurance (128th), Huawei (285th), Amer International Group (295th), China Merchants Bank (350th), and GAC Group (366th). The number of enterprises did not change, but their places ascended compared with that in the previous year. From the number of enterprises on the list of Fortune 500, Guangdong is lower than Beijing (mainly a number of central enterprises) and Shanghai, but higher than other provinces. From the operating incomes, the average operating incomes of Guangdong enterprises were US$47.5 billion, an increase of US$8 billion compared with US$39.5 billion in the previous year. In the past three years, Guangdong has increased the number of enterprises from four to six while Shanghai from six to eight.
 
From the aspect of enterprises on the list of China’s Top 500, Guangdong has 47 enterprises included in Top 500 in 2014, an increase of 12. Compared with other provinces and municipalities, Guangdong exceeded Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Shangdong for the first time.
