Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute to Be Established in SSGKC

On November 7, witnessed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the cooperation agreement on establishing the Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute in Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City (SSGKC) was signed in Singapore. Chen Zhiying, member of the Standing Committee of CPC Guangzhou Committee and director of GDD’s Administrative Committee, Lam Khin Yong, Chief of Staff of Nanyang Technological University, Wang Yingjun, president of South China University of Technology, and Huang Guoxiang, president of Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Investment and Development Co., Ltd., signed the agreement.
 
The project of the Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute initiated and promoted by the government of Guangzhou will be carried out by the Administrative Committee of SSGKC, South China University of Technology, Nanyang Technological University and Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Investment and Development Co., Ltd., covering a land area of about 20,000 square meters. The budget for the first phase project reaches RMB200 million.
 
It was learnt that, the project will be engaged in integration of high-grade international research and development resources and cultivation of high-level talents. In the early period, emphasis will be laid on the research and development and cooperative innovation in five fields, including new-generation electric vehicles and transportation systems of smart cities, nutrition and food science, large-scale public building and sustainable urban development, pollution control and environmental modification as well as biomedical materials and medical equipment. The research findings will be commercialized and applied in the SSGKC by Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Investment and Development Co., Ltd.
 
As a landmark project for the cooperation between Guangdong and Singapore, the SSGKC has attracted 127 projects since June 2010, the total registered capital of which has reached more than RMB20 billion. Under the cooperation between the SSGKC and Ascendas-Singbridge Group, the Ascendas OneHub GKC was built up and the Singapore Center was established, serving as the first one-stop service platform for promoting investment of Singaporean companies in China. In addition, the letter of intent for strategic cooperation in establishment of Centre of Excellence for Software Transfer (CREST) in the SSGKC, which will be the first overseas high-end training center established by Nanyang Technological University.
