Shanghai launches dedicated AI lab at WAIC

Shanghai unveiled a dedicated AI lab on Saturday as the third World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) that witnessed a series of project signing and industrial platform debuts concluded in the city.

Acting mayor Gong Zheng unveiled the Shanghai AI Laboratory at a ceremony where investment deals totaling more than 30 billion yuan were signed. These included eight AI investment fund projects in Shanghai and 36 industrial projects from leading tech companies such as Baidu and Huawei.

Key AI ecosystem platforms, namely Shanghai AI Industry Association, Baiyulan Open AI Lab, as well as Zhangjiang AI Empowerment Center, were also launched.

The city also published the third batch of AI application scenarios, calling on AI-backed solutions to empower seven sectors from manufacturing, transportation to commercial districts.

The three-day WAIC2020, which hosted packed offline and online sessions simultaneously since Thursday, invited more than 550 keynote speakers including seven Turing Award recipients like David Patterson and Nobel Prize laureate Thomas Sargent.
